Lemington Riverside Primary School

North East Festival of Languages

This year, pupils across Lemington Riverside Primary School took part in a range of exciting activities as part of the North East Festival of Languages, celebrating languages and cultures from around the world.

Our youngest learners in Early Years and Year 1 enjoyed a French puppet show led by Nathalie Paris. Through songs, stories and interactive puppetry, children were introduced to simple French words and phrases in a fun and engaging way.

Year 1 also explored the German language and culture through Fun with Felix and Franzi, a series of activities developed by the Goethe-Institut. Pupils enjoyed discovering new words and learning about life in Germany.

Years 2 and 3 learned and performed Love is the Only River by Trinity Rose as part of the Festival Song project. Through music and language, pupils celebrated diversity and developed their confidence in using another language.

Year 3 also took part in a Welcome to China workshop at Newcastle University, explore the language and culture of China.

Year 4 took part in a Yoruba Culture Workshop at Newcastle Civic Centre. Pupils explored aspects of Yoruba language, traditions and culture, broadening their understanding of communities around the world.

Year 5 joined Ursa Lingua’s French Feast, an interactive live lesson exploring French language and culture through engaging activities and discussion.

Within The Bridge, pupils explored foods from different countries through tasting activities and discussions, helping them learn about cultures around the world through sensory experiences.

These activities supported our school ethos of “We Are Global”, encouraging curiosity, cultural understanding and respect for people from different backgrounds while celebrating the rich diversity of our world.
