RE
At Lemington Riverside Primary School, we believe that Religious Education helps our children understand the diverse world they live in. Through RE, pupils learn about different religions and worldviews, think deeply about their own ideas and values, and develop respect, empathy and curiosity towards others.
We follow the Newcastle Agreed Syllabus and use Kapow’s Religion & Worldviews units, which we have adapted to reflect our local community and context.
Across the school, children learn about:
-
Christianity in every year group,
-
In Key Stage 1, Christianity and Judaism (as well as introducing other major world religions),
-
In Key Stage 2, Christianity alongside Hinduism (Years 3–4) and Islam (Years 5–6), plus other worldviews such as Humanism, Sikhism and Buddhism.
Our lessons are carefully sequenced so that children build their knowledge and understanding step by step — from stories and celebrations in the Early Years to exploring beliefs, sacred texts and philosophical questions by Year 6.
By the end of Key Stage 2, our pupils will:
-
Know about the key beliefs, practices, places and festivals in Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Islam, and have explored other worldviews.
-
Understand that religions are diverse and can be explored through different disciplines – for example, by interpreting sacred texts, asking thoughtful questions or looking at the historical and cultural context of beliefs.
-
Be able to think, reason and communicate respectfully – explaining similarities and differences, building arguments and using accurate vocabulary.
-
Reflect on their own ideas and those of others, showing empathy, curiosity and a sense of community.
Our Lemington Values in RE
#Wearelemington – We connect learning to our local area, exploring places of worship in Newcastle, meeting people from different faiths and thinking about how belief shapes life in our community.
#Weareambitious – We set high expectations for all pupils. Children read, compare and discuss religious ideas with care, and are encouraged to back up their opinions with clear reasoning and evidence.
#Weareglobal – We help pupils understand the wider world by exploring how religions and worldviews are lived across different countries and cultures.
#Wearedisciplined – We teach children to use key vocabulary correctly and to record their learning clearly. They learn to ask good questions and evaluate sources thoughtfully.
#Wearecollaborative – RE is rooted in discussion. Pupils learn through dialogue – listening carefully, sharing viewpoints and working together to explore big questions.
#Weareresilient – We don’t shy away from complex or sensitive topics such as equality, suffering or life after death. Pupils learn to think deeply, handle challenge maturely and adapt their views as they gain new understanding.
